Void and air ratio calculator
See how much of a box is empty space around the product, and how much smaller the box could be.
Calculator
83% empty
| Product volume | 320 in³ |
|---|---|
| Box inside volume | 1,920 in³ |
| Right-sized inside (12 × 10 × 6) | 720 in³ |
| Space beyond the cushion you need | 1,200 in³ (63%) |
How it works
- Void ratio = 1 − product volume ÷ box inside volume.
- The right-sized inside is product + 2 × cushion on each axis; the difference is the space you pay to ship.

Reading the result
Void ratio tells you how much of the box is air. A high number means you are paying to ship space and probably filling it with dunnage.
Set the cushion to what the product needs on each side, not to zero. The difference between the box you have and the right-sized inside is what a smaller stock size could save.
