FEFCO 0410: Five panel folder (FPF)

A five panel folder is one cut and scored piece with a fifth panel that closes over one side. Its end flaps fold in layers, so each end carries several thicknesses of board, which suits long, thin items that would push through a normal box end.

Construction

  • Five panels run around the long axis: side, bottom, side, top, then a closing panel that covers one side completely.
  • End flaps on the four main panels fold over each end in turn, building up several layers.
  • There is no manufacturer's joint; the box is folded and closed in one operation.

Closure. Glue or tape the fifth panel to the side it covers; tape the ends if needed.

Blank size

Strip length is 2W + 3H; strip height is L plus the end flaps.

When to use it

Good for

  • Long items of small cross-section: rods, tubes, blinds, posters
  • Products that could punch through a box end in transit

Watch for

  • Many folds per box: slower to set up by hand
  • Long blanks can be hard to run on smaller box plant equipment
