Freight density calculator

Compute shipment density in pounds per cubic foot from its outside dimensions and weight, for one piece or a pallet load.

Calculator

Outside L × W × H, in (include the pallet)

11.25 lb/ft³

600 lb ÷ (48 × 40 × 48 ÷ 1,728 = 53.33 ft³)

Density only. Packgent will add NMFC density classes once the breakpoints are checked against the current classification.

How it works

  1. Density = total weight ÷ (L × W × H ÷ 1,728).
  2. Packgent does not map density to an NMFC class yet; the class breakpoints are pending verification.

Results are estimates for planning. Confirm critical packs by test. Full method.

Reading the result

LTL carriers price by freight class, and density in pounds per cubic foot is the main input to class for most goods. Measure the whole shipping unit, pallet included, at its tallest and widest points.

Packgent shows density only. Which class a density falls into depends on the commodity's NMFC listing, which this site has not yet been able to check against the current tariff.
